South Carolina First Steps to School Readiness is now officially 20 years old! On June 28, 1999, The Honorable James H. Hodges, Governor of South Carolina (1999-2003), established First Steps as a statewide public-private partnership charged with getting South Carolina’s children ready for success in school and life.

Celebrating 20 years of First Steps!
Two decades later, as the state’s only dedicated early childhood agency, we continue to lead the charge to ensure South Carolina’s youngest citizens reach their highest potential.
Through the hard work and dedication of everyone who has impacted our agency, we have experienced tremendous growth, achieved noteworthy milestones and collectively touched hundreds of thousands of lives across the state through the children and families we serve, our teachers, childcare providers, employees, and local county partnerships.
We are extremely thankful for everyone who has contributed to the success and strength of this organization and would like to share with you the impact the organization has made throughout the years.
